A chance meeting with an old friend last week has led me to write on this subject. I have always felt that body follows the mind and that if we keep the mind cheerful, body will not pose any problems. This is a general rule I believed in and so far I remain convinced about my body and mind theory
I have known Mr Agrawal since 1989. We had met in a seminar in Mumbhai. He was a very senior executive in Birla Group. In 1994, following a car accident, he was admitted into Mumbhai Hospital near Churchgate. When I went to see him, he was in Intensive Care Unit. After a long wait, I was allowed to meet him. He was conscious and spoke to me in a very feeble voice. I advised him to remain calm. He told me very confidently that he will come out strong and this was an opportunity to get out of control of Bapu (referring to his employer). I knew that he wanted to start something on his own so that his only son could take care of the Project at an appropriate time. As I was leaving, he informed me that he will give me some good news after five years. This--at a time when he was in ICU and doctors were uncertain about his recovery.
When I met him recently after eighteen years, I came to know that he had achieved what he had dreamt of when he was in ICU. He now runs a plywood manufacturing company near Mysore, His company has a turn over of Rs 800 crores. He came back very strongly after the accident because of his belief that he was going to be an entrepreneur within five years This has reinforced my belief that "it is all in the mind".
Closer home, there is another example. I have known Mr Nair since 2007. He is retired colonel of the Indian army. Though a US Citizen, he has chosen to remain in Bangalore along with his only son who is an IT Professional. We used to meet in morning walks. After a few weeks of walking together, he informed me that he was planning to buy a villa near Meenakshi temple for Rs 6 crores. This statement came when Mr Nair was already 83 years of age. I was wondering how a man at his age could plan to buy a villa and look to live there in three years time. Last week,he gave me a hug and told me that he was leaving Purva Heights to live in his new villa. His zest to live in a big place was un-imaginable--at least for me.He first dreamt of a villa when he was 83 and lived all these years to make his dream come true when he is now 88. Even now, he walks for 90 minutes. I have nothing but great admiration for this man.
I can only recall what I had read as a student from John Milton!s classic

"Paradise Lost"
"The mind is its own place and in itself, can make a Heaven of Hell or a Hell of Heaven"
Lastly, the statement "It is all in the mind" was used liberally while discussing the existence or otherwise of God. in 19th Century England.
