Looking back (this fortnight)

I used to meet Mr Menon atleast for five days in a week while going for
morning walks. He was missing since the middle of January. I thought
that he may have gone to visit one of his sons either in Canada or USA.
Mr Menon is owner of a small mine taken on lease and is younger to me
by two years.

Last week, I was told by my neighbour that Mr Menon had returned home
after spending forty days in Manipal Hospital. We decided to visit him at
his place. He looked very week. His bladder has been removed owing to a
cancerous growth. Doctors have fixed a pouch alongside his left side.
This pouch stores urine and has to be cleaned twice a day. On the day we
visited,we saw his elder son from Canada doing the cleaning. I was shocked to
know
that there are 5000 people with similar pouch in Bangalore. In fact, there is an

Association ofpouch users and they meet once in two months to exchange
information.
Mr Menon burst into tears when he told me that it was only his wife!s prayers
that had saved him
As I was leaving his house, I was wondering why this had
happened to a well-disciplined,confident and god-fearing man like Mr Menon.
I also kept on thinking about two of my friends. One of them has all the bad
habits
in the world and yet is leading a very active and apparently healthy life.
The other was a very honest,god-fearing,well-disciplined and good natured man
who suddenly died of heart attack. It leads me to conclude that leading
a disciplined life is no guarantee to long life.

There was lot good news this week. We were very happy to receive good news
from our three children. Normally, I do not talk about my children.

First news from Kaushal and Vidya. They have bought a new and bigger house in
a posh locality for US 1.7 million.(Rs 8 crores). They performed the Pooja at
the new house.
On that day, we went to Dodda Ganesh temple at Basavangudi and prayed
for their good health, happines, peace of mind and prosperity in their new
house.Both Kaushal
and Vidya have not allowed their material success to go to their heads and we
are
very happy about this. I am confident that they will continue to be level headed
and bring up
Vishal and Kavya with the same good values.I was very happy to see the extent of
initiative
taken by Vidya in the whole exercise. I am sure she will provide great strength
and
support to Kaushal in the times to come.

Next news from Meena. She has received an offer for the post of Vice-president
in
Goldman Sachs,Bangalore. She has come a long way since her return to India
in March 2002,starting with a salary of Rs 10,000/ per month.. India has been
lucky for her.
She has been spending all her earnings on furthingr her education, including her
MBA programme
in the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Kozhikode. Any other girl in her
position would have

remained frustrated, what with an estranged relationship with her husband.
She never gave up hope and continued her pursuit of education and knowledge
I am also happy to note the very high level of confidence in her to deal with
problems/issues.
She managed everything on her own while moving to Gurgaon from Bangalore. I am
proud of her.

Lastly, news from Neema. She has cleared her last paper and has become a
"certified Accountant"
with U.K.qualification. She has worked very hard, managing both her
house,education
and children. She has also been studying for one course or another for the past
so many years, starting with her Masters in Marketing Management in Middlesex
University.
We are praying God that she should get a good job shortly.

We also received good news that my sister!s daughter Deepa had left for Houston.
When I spoke to her some time ago, she was a little frustrated that she was not
able to join her husband in USA. I told her that she would soon go to Houston
and that
before leaving, she should call me. She kept her promise and called me before
her departure
It is their only their determination (and perhaps love) that led to the marriage
of Deepa and Raj
We pray God to bless themboth with a happy stay in Houston.

Lastly, we also saw the new flat being rented by my sister Vasantha. It is a
beautiful
flat.I got good vibrations when I entered the flat. I am sure my sister and her
family
will have a good time in their new abode. I am also confident that with their
entry

into the new house, the long overdue marriage of Karthik will take place.

What gives happiness to parents of my age. it is only good news from children
and good news from near and dear ones.

V.K.Balasubramanian.
